Trauma Talks- Victims and Survivors of Crime Week

Childhood sexual abuse is a silent epidemic. It is a crime that is so widespread that each of us likely know someone who has been victimized. Many victims do not tell anyone until well into adulthood, if at all. The impact of this trauma is significant and is often at the root cause of chronic pain, addiction, poor mental health, homelessness, poverty, suicide, PTSD, anxiety, panic disorder, and so much more. It can rob a person of their potential and leave them living in shame. It is a crime that is happening everywhere, across all demographics.

On May 15th, thanks to the support of the Department of Justice and as part of Victims and Survivors of Crime Week, we are hosting ‘Trauma Talks’, a conversation featuring people with lived experience, therapists, and medical professionals who will discuss the mental, physical, and emotional impacts of this crime.

You’ll gain an understanding the reasons why this remains a crime of epidemic proportions, how to help survivors, and what you can do to prevent children and youth from becoming victims.

In addition, we will feature available resources and peer supporters from Voice Found will be available to talk about their work.

There is no cost to attend however registration is required.

Human Trafficking Awareness day

Human Trafficking Awareness day

February 22, 2007 the House of Commons unanimously condemned human trafficking and modern slavery. Fourteen years later, on Feb 16, 2021, the House of Commons unanimously approved the motion to recognize February 22nd as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

There are a number of misconceptions surrounding human trafficking with one being that it does’t happen in Canada. It absolutely does. In urban and rural settings, in every neighbourhood, and across every socioeconomic status.

We’ve put together some information and invite you to learn, take action, and consider a donation to help support survivors.

Beyond Net Zero: The Canada Human Trafficking Declaration

  • Canadian Museum for Human Rights (map)

Human trafficking is one of the fastest growing crimes in Canada. Forced Labour Slavery is recognized as being a reprehensible violation of human rights causing immediate and long-term harm to individuals and communities. Forced labour is vastly underreported. A Victim/Survivor centred approach is key to preventing and ending victimization through Forced Labour. Collectively, we can improve institutional capacity and strengthen systems essential to creating an environment of safety, human dignity, and thriving communities.

The Rotary Action Group Against Slavery, Not In My City, IJM Canada, and The Mekong Club are partnering to create scalable, sustainable, and measurable solutions that close the justice gaps for people in our communities who are vulnerable to violence and exploitation. This inaugural event will provide an opportunity for collaboration with other Canadians and international changemakers to disrupt and end Human Trafficking and Forced Labour Slavery.
